相比与个人陈述（Personal Statement），动机陈述（Statement of Purpose/ Statement of Intent/ Motivation Letter）通常更正式，重点包括三个方面：

▶▶讨论相关技能、经验和成就
▶▶阐述学术或专业兴趣和目标
▶▶说明你为什么适合该计划

简单来说，SoP需要学术性更强，学术方面的内容至少要占到整篇的80%，常见于偏向研究的专业。很多同学心中的“白月光”LSE对文书尤其挑剔。

经历和成就（Experience and Achievement）

经历表明申请人具备在研究生院取得成功的必要技能。不要只是概括自己所做过的一切--挑选出一些亮点，清晰地描绘出优势和重点，说明自己是如何一路学习和发展的。
可以展示自己对目标领域的知识和相关的研究经历，包括：论文或毕业设计的简要概述、特别有价值的课程、参与的项目、获奖情况、出版物、演讲、培养相关技能或经验的课外活动。
也可以展示自己当前的经历如何和职业发展计划有关联，包括：过去或现在的工作角色、领导或参与的项目、实习、志愿工作、培训课程。
在任何情况下，都要举出具体的例子，给出具体的情境、详细说明所做的事情（包括运用的理论方法和工具）、取得的成果以及收获，并且解释清楚和所申请专业的关系（relevance）。
比如，
修改前：I worked for two months at Company X. There, I enjoyed applying what I had learned in class and connecting with senior colleagues.
修改后：At company X, I found that for a start-up, its data processing could not be outsourced due to business confidentiality and it did not have sophisticated software or a professional IT team to deal with the technical issues. Therefore, I compiled a programme via Python and MySQL to monitor risk indicators in the market. But the design did not fully conquer technical barriers, where it could not be repackaged as an independently accessible file for clients’ reference. This made it clear to me how important it is to help financial enterprises break down barriers and use digital tools and techniques to support financial decision-making and premium services better.

目标和动机（Goals and Motivations)

除了表明自己已为该就读该专业做好准备外，还要说明自己期望从中获得什么。申请的动机是什么？打算如何充分利用其中的机会，它将如何帮助你实现目标？
对于学术项目，可以注明注明自己的研究兴趣，说明这些兴趣是如何与迄今为止所学的知识相联系并以其为基础的。这可能包括：
希望加强专业知识的子领域
想解决的具体问题或疑问
一个研究项目的初步想法
希望发展的理论或方法论途径
虽然不一定要制定深入研究计划，但却可以充分展示自己的热情和对知识边界的探索。
对于就业导向的项目，请概述自己的职业抱负，并说明自身的经历如何影响了您的目标。这可能包括：
想在职业生涯中迈出的下一步。目标是什么职位，该计划将如何帮助您实现这一目标？
转行的动机。您能否将以前的经历与新的方向联系起来？

适配度（Fitness with the program）

重要的是，不仅要说明申请人为什么想学习这个专业，还要说明申请人为什么想在这个特定的机构和院系学习这个专业。
进行研究，提及吸引到申请人的特定课程、专业或院系。
说明自己为什么适合。学习兴趣、工作重点是否与学校的价值观和文化相一致？能为系里做出什么贡献？
讨论你期望从该项目中获得的具体技能、知识和经验。
动机陈述不仅仅是为了推销自己，也是为了说明申请人和项目之间是匹配的。
